While the headlines may have been grabbed in the past few weeks with councillors urging the people of the town not to vote for a former councillor who has decided to come back for some more, the race for the nine seats in Castlebar Town Council promises to be one of the most exciting in the county.

Speaking in Castlebar this week, Independent candidate in Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council elections Michael Kilcoyne urged the people of Mayo to exercise their democratic right and go out and vote. He said: “It is our right if not our obligation to have our say in the election of those people we want to represent us and we should use our vote.” But he warned: “Think carefully before casting your vote. The person you select will represent you for the next five years.”

Castlebar cyclists are taking their lives in their hands because of the absence of dedicated cycle lanes, Town Council election candidate Pat King has claimed.

A Labour party candidate for Castlebar Town Council, has hit out at the Government for what she called a callous attitude towards the old and the young. Bernie Courtney said: “I have met many elderly people who are terrified they will lose their medical card. One couple told me they had received a renewal form from the Department of Social Welfare for their medical card. The form is a gross intrusion into the affairs of elderly people who had found great difficulty in completing the forms. This is no way to treat decent people, the backbone of the country over the years,” said Courtney.

Castlebar Town Council candidate, Stephen Lavelle, has raised the issue of the danger to pedestrians using the roadway through Castle St Car park. “I have observed the danger to pedestrians and people pushing pushchairs attempting to walk along the road while traffic passes in both directions,” he said.

It was independents day in Castlebar on Saturday afternoon, as both Michael Kilcoyne and Frank Durcan were elected to Castlebar Town Council on the first count. After a long morning's counting the tally's came to true, as from early on both independents looked cert. to make the quota which was set at 486, which Kilcoyne came just shy of doubling with his first preference vote of 965 votes. Kilcoyne who was first elected to the council in 1999 has steadily seen his numbers rise through the last two elections.
